Flanders Hotel as seen from the route 52 ($400 million) causeway bridge. I’m sure the traffic flow is much improved, but the two drawbridges were much more interesting and picturesque.

Flanders Hotel suite with ocean view. If I had it to do over again, I would choose a southern or western exposure due to the not so attractive amusement park on the ocean side.

Port-O-Call Hotel, Ocean City, NJ. A nice place for an off-season breakfast. This hotel is located a block north of the site where the four-masted sailing barque Sindia ran aground on December 15, 1901. Nothing remains visible today, but I remember remnants on the beach and in the water when I was a kid.

B-25J Mitchell medium bomber Briefing Time.

16 B-25  bombers were used in the April 18,1942 Doolittle Raid on Japan. The planes took off from the carrier USS Hornet  with no return possible. The mission caused little physical damage, but the psychological impact was significant on both sides.

Note: It was a B-25 that crashed into the Empire State Building on July 28, 1945. This event had an effect on the design of the future World Trade Center. Unfortunately, efforts to protect the the new towers were insufficient due to bigger and faster planes.

Wow, that was  impressive!      Makes me want to see a B-17 and a B-29 take off.

On a sad note, my uncle ( John Philip Eubank, Jr.) and all his crewmates were killed when their B-24J  Liberator crashed at Bury’s Hall Farm, Old Buckenham, England on February 9, 1945. They were returning from their 27th mission.

The Andromeda Galaxy (M31) is the star-like object (located just left of center) with a faint cloudy streak passing diagonally through it. What looks like a star is really the galactic bulge, and the cloudy streak is the spiral disc. The Andromeda Galaxy is the closest spiral galaxy to our own Milky Way Galaxy and is “only” 2,500,000 light-years away. The Hubble Space Telescope can see 5,000 times that distance. 5000 times sounds like a lot, but to understand how amazing that number is you have to apply the inverse square law: twice as far means 1/4 the brightness, triple the distance means 1/9 the brightness, and 5000 times the distance means 1/25,000,000 the brightness!

andromeda_BLOG

Both of these star pictures were taken with my Nikon D300 (equipt with a 18-200 Nikkor zoom lens) in the face of substantial light pollution.

The Andromeda Galaxy is the largest in the Local Group (a cluster of galaxies that includes the Milky Way Galaxy) with perhaps a trillion stars. Our own Milky Way Galaxy comes in second place with about 300 billion stars, and the Triangulum Galaxy is the third largest with around 40 billion stars.

In the below photo the Andromeda Galaxy definately is visable, while the Triangulum Galaxy (M33) is, perhaps,  just barely visable.
